Sometimes you want a hand-brush that rearranges your entire evening. Sometimes you want the bedroom door left very much open. Both are valid reading moods, and neither tells you whether you will care about the people on the page.

This guide to romantasy books by spice level gives you six different routes into fantasy and paranormal romance, from kisses-only library adventures to explicit monster romance. You will find the heat level, the relationship dynamic, the kind of story surrounding it, and the commitment waiting after the final chapter. Because “spicy” is a surprisingly unhelpful recommendation when nobody tells you what it means. 🌶️

A note on the peppers: These are Plotgirlie’s editorial heat guides, informed by romance.io reader ratings and available content descriptions, checked on September 30, 2026. They are subjective, not official age ratings or a complete content-warning list. A higher number means more explicit sexual content, not a better romance. Heat and emotional intensity are separate things.

What each spice level means here

  • 1/5: Attraction, kissing or romantic tension; no on-page sex.
  • 2/5: Sex is implied or happens behind a closed door.
  • 3/5: On-page sex, ranging from mildly described to more descriptive open-door scenes.
  • 4/5: Detailed, explicit sexual scenes.
  • 5/5: Extensive or frequent explicit content with a substantial role in the reading experience.

These six picks cover levels 1, 3, 4 and 5. There is no closed-door 2/5 recommendation in this particular selection. Within the same number, the language, frequency and overall mood can still differ. Read the short explanation rather than choosing by pepper alone.

1. Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson: for the girl who wants tension without on-page sex

Published cover of Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Spice: 🌶️ 1/5 · Romance: distrust to partnership · Setting: dangerous magical libraries · Commitment: a complete main story with an optional follow-up novella.

Elisabeth has grown up among grimoires that can become monsters. When a library disaster draws her into a conspiracy, she must reconsider what she has been taught about sorcerers, including Nathaniel Thorn. His demon companion, Silas, adds another reason to question the neat line between frightening and trustworthy.

This is the pick for wanting the romance to flutter through an adventure rather than take over every chapter. Shared danger gives the relationship room to develop, while the library setting offers a wonderfully specific fantasy atmosphere. The 1/5 rating means no on-page sex; it does not mean nothing alarming happens.

Your reading mood: You want an old-library feeling, a capable heroine and enough romantic possibility to keep an eye on every exchange. Consider another pick if you want an adult, romance-first story with explicit scenes. This is young adult fantasy, with peril and an adventure plot competing for your attention.

Before you commit: Mysteries of Thorn Manor is an optional follow-up novella. You do not need a long sequence of novels to finish Elisabeth’s main adventure.

2. Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross: for the girl who falls harder over a letter

Published cover of Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

Spice: 🌶️ 3/5, mild open door · Romance: rival journalists and anonymous correspondence · Setting: a war shaped by gods · Commitment: book one of a duology.

Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt compete in a newsroom, while magical letters create a different kind of connection. Their story unfolds against a war involving rival gods. The fantasy is tied to the cost of that conflict rather than a constant parade of magical creatures.

Choose this when emotional intimacy is the thing you are chasing. A letter can carry an honesty that the person across the desk never gets to hear, and that gap is the attraction of this setup. Think private tenderness beneath public friction, with a setting that makes the relationship feel vulnerable.

What 3/5 means here: There is on-page sexual content, with milder description than the explicit picks farther down this list. Its young adult classification is not a guarantee of a closed bedroom door. If avoiding any described sex is your priority, choose Sorcery of Thorns instead.

Before you commit: This is rivalry rather than two sworn enemies trying to destroy one another. It also ends with unresolved stakes: you need Ruthless Vows to complete the story. Choose it when you have room for two books and can handle wartime danger and grief alongside the romance.

3. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna: for the girl who wants warmth with the door open

Published cover of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

Spice: 🌶️ 3/5 · Romance: an outsider and a guarded librarian · Setting: contemporary Britain with hidden magic · Commitment: standalone.

Mika Moon is used to keeping her witchcraft private and her connections temporary. An invitation to teach three young witches at Nowhere House puts her inside a household that does not fit those rules. Jamie, its protective librarian, is less immediately convinced she belongs.

The appeal is having the romance grow inside a larger story about belonging. There is room for affection beyond the couple: children, an unconventional household and the possibility of being welcomed without shrinking yourself first. This is a useful choice if romantic chemistry alone is not enough to make a fictional home feel worth staying in.

What 3/5 means here: Expect open-door sexual content. The comforting premise and cheerful cover should not be used as a substitute for a heat check. The romance can be gentle in emotional tone while still putting sex on the page.

Your reading mood: You want found family, a prickly love interest and a world closer to ours than a map-heavy kingdom. Consider another pick if you want battlefield strategy, royal intrigue or constant threat. There are problems to solve, but domestic connection is a large part of the invitation.

4. Radiance by Grace Draven: for the girl who is tired of cruelty being called chemistry

Published cover of Radiance by Grace Draven

Spice: 🌶️ 3/5 · Romance: arranged marriage, friendship to love · Setting: two very different peoples · Commitment: the Wraith Kings series.

Human Ildiko and Kai prince Brishen marry for political reasons. Neither initially finds the other physically appealing. What they can offer is consideration, humor and a willingness to make an unfamiliar situation bearable together.

That starting point makes this a particularly useful alternative to hostile marriage romances. You are not waiting for one person to stop humiliating the other so the story can become tender. The pleasure is watching companionship change what they notice and value. Attraction follows a relationship that already has something to stand on.

What 3/5 means here: The relationship includes on-page sex. Choose it for an open-door romance where emotional cooperation matters, rather than assuming a respectful couple means a low-heat book. The interspecies setup also means different bodies and cultural expectations are part of the romance.

Before you commit: Radiance is book one, and Eidolon continues the central story. It belongs on a spice guide, but not on a list promising you can leave an entire narrative behind after one novel. Pick it when the couple’s dynamic appeals enough to justify a continuing world.

5. Bride by Ali Hazelwood: for the girl who wants the marriage alliance to get very personal

Published cover of Bride by Ali Hazelwood

Spice: 🌶️ 4/5 · Romance: a politically arranged vampire–werewolf marriage · Setting: modern paranormal society · Commitment: a self-contained central romance, with a companion book available.

Misery Lark, a vampire, enters a marriage alliance with werewolf alpha Lowe Moreland. There are political reasons for the arrangement, and private reasons she is willing to accept it. Distrust and proximity sit beside a mystery that gives her more to do than wait for the marriage to become romantic.

This is a change of lane within the broader fantasy-romance shelf. Expect paranormal species politics and an adult relationship in a modern-feeling world. If you are searching specifically for ancient kingdoms, elaborate spell systems or a long heroic quest, the marriage premise alone will not make it the same kind of book.

What 4/5 means here: Explicit, detailed scenes, including species-specific sexual anatomy. The werewolf element affects the sexual content rather than functioning only as atmospheric decoration. That is useful to know before picking it as your first paranormal romance.

Your reading mood: You want enforced closeness, secrecy and substantial heat. Before you commit: The central couple’s romance is self-contained; Mate offers another story in the world. Choose this over Radiance when you want a more explicit paranormal setup rather than a friendship-led fantasy marriage.

6. A Soul to Keep by Opal Reyne: for the girl ready to try a genuinely monstrous love interest

Published cover of A Soul to Keep by Opal Reyne

Spice: 🌶️ 5/5 · Romance: human heroine and a Duskwalker · Setting: a demon-threatened world · Commitment: book one of Duskwalker Brides.

Reia is offered up by her village to Orpheus, a skull-faced Duskwalker. Her predicament becomes the starting point for a relationship with a being who is unmistakably nonhuman. This is monster romance in a literal sense, not simply a handsome man with an ominous reputation.

The recommendation works best when curiosity about that difference is part of your reading mood. A love interest’s unfamiliar body, behavior and place in the world are central to the premise. If you want your fantasy romance to stretch beyond a familiar human pairing, this is the most pronounced departure in the guide.

What 5/5 means here: Extensive explicit sexual content, including nonhuman anatomy. The high heat comes with dark imagery, demons and violence. A 5/5 pepper rating does not describe those other elements, so check the author’s content warnings separately before choosing it.

Before you commit: This starts a connected series; the author recommends reading Duskwalker Brides in order. Consider another pick if you want a cozy setting, a conventionally human-looking love interest or a single isolated world. Try Bride for paranormal heat, or Radiance for a gentler relationship dynamic between different peoples.

How to choose without letting the pepper choose for you

Start with what you want to feel, then check what you want to see on the page. For tenderness through correspondence, choose Divine Rivals. For being welcomed into a household, choose Irregular Witches. For a couple who offer each other kindness before attraction, choose Radiance. These books share a 3/5 guide, yet answer quite different reading needs.

Next, check your patience for a sequel. A standalone evening and a duology weekend are different commitments. Finally, look up any specific content boundaries using the author’s warnings or a detailed reader content guide. “No spice” does not mean no violence, and “very spicy” does not automatically mean an emotionally dark relationship.

Quick questions before you add one to your TBR

Which is the lowest-spice book here?

Sorcery of Thorns, at 1/5: romantic attraction without on-page sex. It still contains fantasy peril.

Which cozy pick has open-door romance?

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. Its warm setting and found family coexist with a 3/5 heat guide.

Is a 3/5 rating the same in every book?

No. This is a broad category, not a scene count. Divine Rivals is a milder open-door example; wording and intensity vary across the other recommendations.

Your next favorite does not need to win a spice contest. It needs to match the kind of evening you were hoping to have. Save the guide for the next time a beautiful cover tells you everything except whether the bedroom door stays open. ♡
